How to Care for Gold-Plated Jewelry

Gold-plated jewelry gets its color from a layer of gold on the surface of another metal. Because that finish lives on the outside of the piece, the way you wear, clean and store it can make a noticeable difference over time.

Keep it dry when you can

Water itself is not the only concern. Pools, hot tubs and salt water can contain chemicals or minerals that are harder on plated finishes. Removing jewelry before swimming, showering or exercising can reduce unnecessary exposure.

Put jewelry on last

Fragrance, hairspray, sunscreen, hand cream and cosmetics can leave residue on jewelry. A simple routine helps: get dressed, apply products, let them settle, then put on your jewelry.

Clean gently

For routine care, a soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth is usually the safest starting point. Avoid aggressive polishing, scouring pads and harsh chemical cleaners unless the specific product instructions say they are suitable.

Store pieces separately

Chains, pendants and rings can rub against one another in a jewelry box. Storing pieces separately in soft pouches or compartments reduces scratching and tangling. Make sure jewelry is dry before putting it away.

Rotate everyday favorites

Plated finishes naturally experience more friction when worn constantly. Rotating pieces gives the finish a break and can also help prevent tangles and wear in chains and clasps.

Watch high-contact areas

Rings and bracelets usually experience more contact with desks, sinks, bags and other surfaces than pendants do. If a piece is especially meaningful, consider whether occasional wear better fits how you want to preserve it.

Follow the instructions for the exact piece

Not all gold-tone jewelry is constructed the same way. Some designs use gold plating over stainless steel, others use different base metals or finishes. Follow the material and care details on the individual Everword product page rather than assuming one cleaning method fits every piece.
